Bloatware

ho hum, I was about to plug my old HP Scanjet scanner into the laptop for the first time to scan in a picture or two (you'll see why later). Hmm nope XP doesn't recognise the damn thing. Off to HP's site to find a driver.

Now, most things get autodetected, the USB serial adapter and wifi card were the two notable exceptions. The drivers were a couple of MB each.

Well bugger me, how f'ing big is the HP scanjet driver. 80 MEGABYTES!

It is no longer just HP consultants[1] who I shall hold in contempt, their programmers are added to the list.

[1] 'twas the summer of 2000. I have never ever met such a bunch of pretentious arogant myopic duplicitous weasels in my life. [oh except for the time I met some pretentious arogant myopic duplicitious weasels from HP in 1999 - I guess I'll never learn].
