Dinner fit for a King?

What did George Bush really think of lunch at the Dun Cow Inn in Sedgefield?

One can only hope he enjoyed it more than the Daily Telegraph reviewer:

What can I tell you about the food at the Dun Cow Inn? Everything we have to eat here is more horrible than it needs to be - for a start, a change of oil in the fryers is long overdue - with the exception of the salmon, which is just about OK. The steak is overcooked and tasteless, the battered onion rings are a greasy aberration, the gnarled chips look like a plate of big toes, the chicken is desiccated, the mash is lumpy and the accompanying sauce is hopeless, hopeless, hopelessly taste and virtue-free.

The home-made bread-and-butter pudding at least has the clumsy whisper of homespun authenticity, meaning that someone at some point made an effort in its construction. Elsewhere, all is slung out and dished up without much thought or charm and the cost is quite high, given that what you actually get is well below-average pub food. I notice lots of other diners, not just us, pushing away their full plates with a grimace.

What on earth will important international visitors make of it? After a visit to the Dun Cow Inn, they will probably decide to stay at home for ever or insist on a personal entourage of five chefs whenever they venture out into the world. Or did someone just do that?

To top it off, £43 quid for two, excluding drinks and service. I'd have to try damn hard to find such a meal at such a high price in Cambridge!

Now for an occasional column in which I shall present you with some choice George W. Bush quotes.

"It is a mission about which I was informed, and I authorized.'
-News conference, CNN, 16 February 2001

"The mission of the military is to fight and be able to win war, and therefore prevent war from happening in the first place."
-GOP Debate, 15 February 2000

"We cannot let terrorists and rogue nations hold this nation hostile or hold our allies hostile"
-Iowa, 21 August 2000

I wished I were as linguistically able as George W Bush is.
