In doing a bit of research for the previous article (Former Israeli soldier: “we behaved like animals, criminals, thieves” toward Palestinians), I came across a website entitled "Apostates of Islam". The title should be self explanatory, although given the literacy of some of the comments this site receives, I'm not so sure. Anyway, did you know:
Quran 4:34: Men are the maintainers of women because Allah has made some of them to excel others and because they spend out of their property; the good women are therefore obedient, guarding the unseen as Allah has guarded; and (as to) those on whose part you fear desertion, admonish them, and leave them alone in their sleeping places and beat them; then if they obey you, do not seek a way against them; surely Allah is High, Great.
and a personal testimony from one of the apostates:
“Islam didn’t make sense in many ways, and then I saw the so-called "miracles" of Quran are exaggerated stories. By knowing these 2 facts, I knew Islam was not a religion from God, but a creation of mankind. I believe Islam is not right for me, because I believe humans are born free, and for Allah to impose laws on us is unfair. Sure, breaking the speed limit is also a law but it helps protect other innocent civilians. Following Islamic rules like eating Halal food, Prayer and Hajj doesn’t protect or benefit people in any significant way.”
It is always interesting to read different viewpoints, and this site certainly has plenty of eye opening testimonials and other useful information.

I like the approach you endorse. I too have done my own web research on Islam. After every attrocity done in the name of Allah, I was intrigued as to why Allah's name is used frequently now days to justify such barbaric acts.
Moderate Mulsims will tell you the 7 Pillars of Faith is proof positive that Islam is a religion of peace, and tolerance.
However, critics and apsotates say the Quran is full of contradictions. Especially the Sura you quoted in your post, where beating ones wife is sanctioned.
Moderate Muslims say there is proof of miracles and devine scientific observations. Yet the same apostates point out that Islam claims semen from men come from the back bone. This was the theory of ancient Rome, which the Prophet Muhhamad must have been influenced by.
Muslims also claim Jesus was not the son of God, only a Prophet like Muhammad. It also makes an error to geneology as to whom Mary was related to.
During the time of Muhammad, pagan god worship was practiced by thr majority. Near where Muhammad lived, was a shrine to all the different pagan gods. One of these gods happen to be Allah, the Moon God. Hence the Crescent Moon of Islam.
All of these facts points to a man who was partly influenced by other religions and cultures and formed his own cult.
That is why Extremist Muslims are so fervor in their quest to literally "Cut" down any who expose Islam for what it is. Nothing is more evident of this, then the "Satanic Versus". One of the twelve or sixteen wife's of Muhammad (Only the Prophet can marry more than two woman.) was a pagan worshipper. She pushed Muhammad so bad to accomodate her, that he eventually changed his mind about one god and said three were ok. These versus of the Quran were labeled the Satanic Versus, and promptly destroyed by Muslims to protect Islam. A controversial subject in the Arab world, where even uttering those words can have a "Fatwa" put out on your head. One highly claimed Indian author Rushdie, found this out. He titled his book, The Satanic Versus. It is a satire, that may offend a devout muslim. However, it nowhere mentions anything about the actual "Satanic Versus." Indeed many of those who would just as fast murder Mr. Rushdie for this scandalous book, have never read his book.

I wanted to respond to you had to say. BY all means, i wish to have a very in depth discussion on the matter. It seems that all or most of the information that you are getting is from the internet, which at best is shaky information. just as the points you make against islam, there is another one that is for it, even out weighing. First, the info about mohammed pbuh that you point out are just as outrageous as the ones you dont hear. If something exactly the same was said about Jesus pbuh, the next day you would see someone bite my head off for it. the fact is that unless you were there centuries ago, there is nothing, not even the INTERNET to contradict what is true or not. saying that mohammed pbuh did create such a long and scientific book (Qu'ran) out of influence of other religions is even more obsurd than the fact that he was illiterate. even if he wasnt, it is a hell of a lot more difficult to write such a book, especially back in his times. the Quran has not just this one scientific observation. for example, one verse talks about the human embryo to look like a chewing substance, which is infact true;if you take a piece of chewing gum and take it out of your mouth , it looks like a human embryo.so i just wanted to point out that there is alot more evidence that supports islam that is against it ...
