Anal retention, chronic or temporary, it can strike at any time and the effects can be devastating. Judging by the number of hits we have been getting from search engines about this issue Dr. Roos (our medical advisor) has provided this first installation about dealing with anal retention.

Without going into too many details at this point about the symptoms, they tend to be obvious, we will be dealing with prevention and cure. In the case of psychological anal retention the techniques of prevention and cure are identical, physiological anal retention can be extremely unpleasant and often medication or even surgery is required to correct it.

In this instalment we will be concentrating on two behavioural areas to avoid or reduce this unfortunate affliction. The areas of lifestyle we are going to be looking at are diet and temporal stress.

1. Diet: The old saying “you are what you eat” cannot be truer in this context. You could also say “garbage in, garbage out”. If you are asking yourself “where is he going with this?” then it is possible you do not already realise the importance of diet. The main issue here is one of ‘sensitivity’. Unlike a fully fledged allergy which can result in extreme discomfort (pain) or even death, a sensitivity can manifest itself in a much more subtle fashion. Look for unexplained changes in skin colour, feelings of tiredness or even irrational behavioural desires – these, along with anal retention are classic symptoms of a sensitivity.

If you are a sufferer take a long hard look at your regular diet. If possible restrict certain food types on different days and see if your symptoms alter or disappear. There are many common allergies to wheat (grain) based products and diary products.

2. Temporal Stress: This can be a more difficult to pin down issue, especially in our hectic, competitively driven society. If you seem to be constantly running late, adjust your schedule, if you cannot adjust your schedule think carefully about what you are really doing with your time and seek to maximise efficiency. Anal retention is often triggered by constant pressure to be in a place by a certain time. Your digestive system will not respond well to this sort of strain and will be confused by the stress hormones present in your body.

Case study 1 – look a the picture and examine the difference between Gary and Andrew. Andrew (on the left) is happy, but Gary is sad. What is the difference? The answer is only one minute! Andrew is one minute earlier, regardless of whether he is running to catch the bus or to see his favourite TV programme small differences such as these can make a big difference to your body’s life systems.

Next week Dr. Roos will be looking at some more aspects of anal retention.

I have a son who has been suffering from anal retention for a long period of time now and are at our wits end in trying to find a lasting solution. I will look onto this site again to see what other info we can find . We have been lucky enough to consult with a Dr Roos here in Durban.

My son is 18 months old, and since August 2005 he has suffered with anal retention. My husband and I have talked with many doctors, but nothing seems to work. Is there anybody out there who has any advice on what to do about this problem?
